US Hard Wood Floor – Five Of The Top Choices

Here in the U.S.A., as we are facing an ever-changing global economy, there is a growing faction of people dedicated to bringing back the ‘Made in America’ moniker. American made, or in the case of hard wood flooring, American grown, emotes a feeling of pride among those who make and/or fabricate U.S.-born products as well as people who install them in place of carpet in their homes.

And so, as per this trend, this list of five of the top American-grown hard wood flooring species commences. Five of the top American-grown hard wood flooring species are:

1) American Cherry: One of the best hard woods utilized in furniture for a good reason, American cherry, also known as Black Cherry, is also a fantastic flooring wood due to its fine, tight grain and warm, maroon-like tone; which develops over time after acceptable exposure to daylight. A floor laid with Black Cherry and accented with a beautiful area rugs is a true show stopper!

2) North American Walnut: Another actually wonderful hard wood common in quality furniture, Black Walnut, as it is commonly known, is a natural deep-hued brown that does wonders in warming up any room; especially as a complimentary wood with lighter variations.

3) Red Oak: A true American classic, North American Red Oak is the most popular hard wooden floors choice in numerous American homes due to its ever-lasting beauty, acute sturdiness, and acceptable supply; which pretty frequently keeps the cost down. Red Oak looks great in almost every application you would choose it for.

4) White Oak: Less in supply than other Oak varieties, White Oak still remains an extremely well-liked flooring choice due to its unique grain that many times appears to be ‘speckled’. This marble-like quality of White Oak is actually attracting. Visitors to your house will certainly be impressed!

5) American Hard Maple: One of the most well liked selections for American flooring is definitely Hard Maple. Known for its classic durability (as witnessed on lots of basketball courts) and its creamy beige to brown tone, American Hard Maple is a winning floor choice for any one that selects it.

And there you have it. If you are one of those discriminating house owners who is building a new home or simply transforming an existing home, you cannot get it wrong with any of the above 5, hard wood, American-grown, flooring choices.

Each flooring is a one off. Each one is beautiful. And each one would look impressive in your house. Select wisely!

North American Indians: A Very Short Introduction

North American Indians: A Very Short Introduction

$7.29

When Europeans first arrived in North America, between five and eight million indigenous people were already living there. But how did they come to be here? What were their agricultural, spiritual, and hunting practices? How did their societies evolve and what challenges do they face today? Eminent historians Theda Perdue and Michael Green begin by describing how nomadic bands of hunter-gatherers followed the bison and woolly mammoth over the Bering land mass between Asia and what is now Alaska between 25,000 and 15,000 years ago, settling throughout North America. They describe hunting practices among different tribes, how some made the gradual transition to more settled, agricultural ways of life, the role of kinship and cooperation in Native societies, their varied burial rites and spiritual practices, and many other features of Native American life. Throughout the book, Perdue and Green stress the great diversity of indigenous peoples in America, who spoke more than 400 different languages before the arrival of Europeans and whose ways of life varied according to the environments they settled in and adapted to so successfully. Most importantly, the authors stress how Native Americans have struggled to maintain their sovereignty–first with European powers and then with the United States–in order to retain their lands, govern themselves, support their people, and pursue practices that have made their lives meaningful. Going beyond the stereotypes that so often distort our views of Native Americans, this Very Short Introduction offers a historically accurate, deeply engaging, and often inspiring account of the wide array of Native peoples in America.

In this extraordinary new alternate history, Flint begins a dramatic saga of the North American continent at a dire turning point, forging its identity and its future in the face of revolt from within, and attack from without in the War of 1812.From the Publisher:Eric Flint’s acclaimed 1634: The Galileo Affair was a national bestseller from one of the most talked-about voices in his field. Now, in this extraordinary new alternate history, Flint begins a dramatic saga of the North American continent at a dire turning point, forging its identity and its future in the face of revolt from within, and attack from without. In the War of 1812, U.S. troops are battling the British on the Canadian border, even as a fierce fight is being waged against the Creek followers of the Indian leader Tecumseh and his brother, known as The Prophet. In Europe, Napoleon Bonaparte’s war has become a losing proposition, and the British are only months away from unleashing a frightening assault on Washington itself. Fateful choices are being made in the corridors of power and on the American frontier. As Andrew Jackson, backed by Cherokee warriors, leads a fierce attack on the Creek tribes, his young republic will soon need every citizen soldier it can find. What if – at this critical moment – bonds were forged between men of different races and tribes? What if the Cherokee clans were able to muster an integrated front, and the U.S. government faced a united Indian nation bolstered by escaping slaves, freed men of color, and even influential white allies?Through the remarkable adventures of men who were really there – men of mixed race, mixed emotions, and a singular purpose – The Rivers of War carries us in this new direction, brilliantly transforming an extraordinary chapter of American history. With a cast of unforgettable characters – from James Monroe and James Madison to Sam Houston, Francis Scott Key, and Cherokee chiefs John Ross and Major Ridge

In this remarkable evocation of the American past, David Traxel chronicles the extraordinary events of 1898 — a year without rival in United States history for its extravagant adventure and far-reaching significance. Traxel’s account centers upon his vivid portrayal of America’s first foray into international military affairs, the Spanish-American War. Spurred on by the yellow journalism of Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, the United States entered the war that garnered the nation Puerto Rico and the Philippines and initiated the ascension of a little-known assistant secretary of the navy, Theodore Roosevelt. But while the Rough Riders were capturing the nation’s attention abroad, bloody battles were occurring within the nation’s own borders. Coal workers and company guards fought in lllinois, while racial conflict led to bloodshed in North Carolina, and in Minnesota the last battle between Native Americans and the U.S. Army resulted in the defeat of government troops. Radical advances in technology led to less violent but equally important changes as the production of the first gasoline-powered car heralded a new era, and the first million-dollar advertising campaign (for Uneeda Biscuits) revealed the growing importance of marketing to a country in the midst of urbanization. An important contribution to the nation’s cultural history, 1898 is a fascinating account of the definitive year that foretold the American Century.

2001 Colorized Statehood Quarters

$29.95

The most popular coin series in U.S. history just got better. This state quarter collection is brilliantly colorized to bring out every subtle detail of the engraver’s masterpiece. In 1999, the United States Mint began commemorating each of the 50 states by issuing a special quarter. Each quarter would be minted for 10 weeks only, after which the dies are destroyed and they can never be minted again. The program has proven to be a huge success with the American public and many of the finest coins are quickly snatched up by collectors. Now you can own a complete set of each year’s minting. Each set includes five quarters that are all guaranteed to be in choice, hand select condition. The quarters were then beautifully colorized using a special process to create a coin that it truly a fine piece of art. The 2001 set includes: New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont and Kentucky.

A Beast the Color of Winter: The Mountain Goat Observed

$18.95

In North America there is one large animal that belongs almost entirely to the realm of towering rock and unmelting snow. Pressing hard against the upper limit of life’s possibilities, it exists higher and steeper throughout the year than any other big beast on the continent. It is possibly the best and most complete mountaineer that ever existed on any continent. Oreamnos americanus is its scientific name. Its common name is mountain goat. Resourceful, belligerent, and unbelievably sure-footed, the mountain goat is a white-coated survivor from the Ice Age. Oreamnos american us shares its dizzying alpine world with elk, eagles, bighorn sheep, and grizzlies. This first full-length book on the mountain goat offers a superbly written portrait of its life, habits, and environment. Douglas H. Chadwick tracked mountain goat herds for seven years, and his observations are richly textured and replete with fascinating and dramatic details. We learn of the mountain goats’ lives from birth to adulthood, their feeding habits, unique social behavior and courtship rituals, and their long history. Chadwick also makes clear the troubling and escalating impact of the modern world on the mountain goat’s wilderness home.

A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia: The 1590 Theodor de Bry Latin Edition

$35.09

For more than 400 years, scholars from an array of disciplines have recognized Theodor de Bry’s 1590 edition of Thomas Hariot’s A briefe and true report of the new found land of Virginia as a book whose influence shaped contemporary European perceptions of North America, as well as subsequent research on that period for centuries to come. The book, upon which the present volume is based, is from the collections of the Library at the Mariners’ Museum. It is extremely rare, containing hand-colored illustrations from the period, and is one of only three recorded copies with colored plates. This complete facsimile edition presents de Bry’s exceptional engravings, based on John White’s sixteenth-century watercolors, in their original hand-colored form. The book is available in paperback and as a limited cloth edition of two hundred numbered copies. Both editions are printed by the award-winning Stinehour Press. As the first volume in de Bry’s celebrated Grand Voyages, a series of publications chronicling many of the earliest expeditions to the Americas, this book, which incorporates a 1588 text by Thomas Hariot, was illustrated and published in four languages. It became for many Europeans their first glimpse of the American continent. Accompanying the Latin facsimile is an English text. The first section is modernized from earlier versions of the English, and the second part, which accompanies the plates, is newly translated from the original Latin. In addition to a valuable introduction, the book includes two illuminating essays. The first, by Karen Ordahl Kupperman, examines the early American settlement and tells how a collaboration between the writer and mathematician ThomasHariot and the artist John White (later governor of the Roanoke Colony) evolved into a rich study not only of English colonial life but of the Indian culture and the natural resources of the region. The second essay, by Peter Stallybrass, uncovers new information in the much studied plates

A Broken Beauty

$6.48

A Broken Beauty draws from the recent output of fourteen North American artists who work in figurative and narrative modes. As Postmodern artists, crossing the threshold of the 21st century, each engages the human condition and explores non-traditional notions of beauty in the human body. This occurs when they introduce brokenness (physical, mental, and spiritual) into their renderings of human embodiment. As a result, they turn the long tradition of Western idealization of beauty on its head and inside out. For the viewer, this means an invitation to contemplate the body’s capacity for beauty despite brokenness, in the midst of brokenness, and, ironically, because of brokenness. Viewers of the images in A Broken Beauty are challenged to be present to the struggle and grace emerging from deeply personal stories, historical and sacred narratives, and the terrors of history that shaped yesterday and will give us tomorrow.

A Century of Dishonor

$19.95

First published in 1881 and reprinted in numerous editions since, Helen Hunt Jackson’s A Century of Dishonor is a classic account of the U.S. government’s flawed Indian policy and the unfair and cruel treatment afforded North American Indians by expansionist Americans. Jackson wrote the book as a polemic to appeal to the hearts and conscience of the American people , who she hoped would demand legislative reform from Congress and redeem the country’s name from the stain of a century of dishonor . Her efforts, which constitute a landmark in Indian reform, helped begin the long process of public awareness for Indian rights that continues to the present day. Beginning with a legal brief on the original Indian right of occupancy, A Century of Dishonor continues with Jackson’s analysis of how irresponsibility, dishonesty, and perfidy on the part of Americans and the U.S. government devastated the Delaware, Cheyenne, Nez Perce, Sioux, Ponca, Winnebago, and Cherokee Indians. Jackson describes the government’s treatment of the Indians as a shameful record of broken treaties and unfulfilled promises exacerbated by a sickening record of murder, outrage, robbery, and wrongs committed by frontier settlers, with only an occasional Indian retaliation. Such notable events as the flight of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce’s and the Cherokee Trail of Tears illustrate Jackson’s arguments.

A Century of Great Western Stories

$150.66

JOHN JAKES, #1 New York Times bestselling author of such acclaimed historical fiction as North and South and The Kent Family Chronicles, has long been both a fan and a distinguished writer of novels and stories about the American West. Now, with the turning of the millennium, he has compiled in one volume a century’s worth of his favorite Western fiction. To illustrate the evolution of the genre, Jakes has included such legendary authors as Owen Wister, Zane Grey, and Louis L’Amour alongside their more contemporary peers such as Loren Estleman and Elmer Kelton. While the stories have changed over the years, certain timeless themes of Western fiction remain constant. At the heart of the stories are ideas that have become synonymous with the American dream — the frontier spirit, individual freedoms, and man’s relationship with the land.A Century of Great Western Stories is essentially a retrospective of Western writing over the past hundred years, but Jakes also sets out to give readers a glimpse of what the future might hold for Western fiction. The current crop of contemporary Western fiction. The current crop of contemporary Western authors shows that the Old West will always have a place in the world of fiction: Like the American dream, which it celebrates, Western fiction will persevere.

A Church Divided: The Vatican Versus American Catholics

$4.07

Is the Roman Catholic Church heading toward an irrevocable schism? Two factors that have been traditionally regarded as signs of unity and inspiration now threaten the very life of the Church: papal authority and eligibility requirements for the priesthood. Many American Catholics today are seriously questioning the authority of the Church, whose leaders claim absolute power over their faith and morals. Priests are leaving the Church and marrying publicly without dispensation from Rome; in fact, since 1965, more than 19,000 priests in the United States and 100,000 priests worldwide have married. Catholics in increasing numbers are supporting the idea of female clergy and rejecting celibacy as a requirement of the priestly office. In A Church Divided: The Vatican versus American Catholics, priest and ex-Jesuit Terrance Sweeney explores in great detail the issues of Church authority and the priesthood. Part One of this volume describes the results of two recent polls conducted by Sweeney, which reveal that a significant number of North American bishops think the mission of the Church and the pastoral needs of the faithful would be better served by a priesthood that includes marriage and celibacy, women and men. The complete results of Sweeney’s poll, which was ordered suppressed by the Superior-General of the Jesuit Order under Vatican pressure, are published here for the first time. Part Two examines Church canons mandating celibacy for priests and maleness for ordination. Exploring these canons from biblical, historical, and ethical perspectives, Sweeney concludes that Church laws imposing continence on priests violate human nature and contravene divine law by denying to clergy theGod-given right to marry. Part Two also describes how exclusion of women from the priesthood based on gender alone is an insult to the dignity of Christian women, as well as a direct contradiction of the image of God and Christ revealed in women living lives of faith and love.
